Ulla is one my students from my intensive course, Portraits as Visual Drama. This was meant to be a simple demonstration shot. But somehow I think that Ulla is beautiful and I love this image.

Nice one. I prefer the lighter shadows here compared with the portrait of Laura.
Wow. It's cool that people are picking up on the lighting. For what it is worth, Laura was lit by a strip lightbox going across instead of up down. It is more a fashion lighting technique and it is not even. The shadows are harsh. Ulla is lit with the modelling light of an Octabank. The Octabank is a huge soft light, thus the ligther shadows. The softness in the image comes from not using the flash, but using the modelling light and opening up the aperture of the lens to maximum, in this case it was f2.8.
But there is also the element of post processing of both images. The black and white also received a more contrasty treatment.
I am a portrait photographer. I am inspired by photographs that go beyond the literal documentation of what a person looks like. I want to show something about the condition of a person or what is inside the person. That is my daily challenge.
