Singapore Dance Theatre behind the scenes

TNH_061001_0206.jpg

I am shooting the Singapore Dance Theatre in rehearsal, behing the scenes, raw. This has been my dream project for over six years since I became a professional photographer. Maybe longer, but circumstances have been against me up until now. Even now, I know that there are images that I love, that show a raw emotion in motion. Sometimes this goes against the ballet asthetics of clean lines, but as I danced and as I watched dance, it was not the moments of perfect stillness that called me, but the raw motion of life.

There will be an exhibition of the photographs that I have taken at Citylink, where I usually display my images from November 11 to the end of December.

Joshi and Thais. This is an amazing couple of models and I was fortunate to be able to do a test for them.

The lighting is actually quite simple, but the equipment was top notch. I was using profoto lights and took this studio series on the Hasselblad H2D with a 22megapixel back. Thais hair was done by Ivan of Insquare and the clothes were from Shilouette, the bridal atelier. Thais and Joshi are represented by Phantom in Singapore. I hate to say this, but the truth is, when you want to do simple classy things, top notch equipment is a must. Just like when you want to create a minimalist house, the finish must be top notch.

Kit Chan in Forbidden City

forbiddencity01

This picture keeps turning up all around town everytime Singapore Repertory Theatre stages Forbidden City. The pay for this shoot was very low and the general manager kept telling me I am expensive. But they are able to hire performers, writers and composers from overseas. Sigh... They have used it to front their musical so many times. Is that not worth something financially? Until arts groups starting treating local talent with respect, it will be difficult to nuture talent in Singapore. Peace.

My friend Zul leads the band Tania. They are cutting a live album and Zul asked me to shoot for the album cover. I spent a whole night shooting the band at Harry's (Orchard Towers). I was really tired the next day but it was a really fun shoot.

The lead singer Alban, is such a queen!
